Dr. Berhanemeskal Assefa
Principal Technical Advisor - Ethiopia
Berhanemeskal Assefa has more than 30 years of clinical and managerial experience in medicine and public health, and has been trained widely in the areas of TB, TB/HIV, MDR-TB, management and leadership, and health systems strengthening. He currently serves as the TB principal technical advisor and project director supervisor for the Challenge TB (CTB) project in South Sudan, the CTB project in Nigeria and the TRACK TB project in Uganda.
In 2009, he joined MSH's HIV/AIDS Care and Support (HCSP) project based in Ethiopia as TB and TB/HIV clinical advisor, which was the largest USAID-funded program for HIV/AIDS in Africa at the time. As MSH's principal technical advisor for TB in Africa and Asia, he also supported the USAID bilateral project, HEAL TB, and led the MSH/TB CAP and TB CARE I technical team in Ethiopia, where he helped implement innovative approaches to increase TB and TB/HIV case detection. He actively participated in technical working groups that developed national guidelines and tools, introduced operational validations, implemented new diagnostic procedures, and conducted the first TB prevalence survey (PS) in Ethiopia and Africa. Prior to joining MSH, Berhanemeskal worked as a clinician, medical director, and program coordinator. He holds a medical degree from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.
