Overview of the Situation of Maternal Morbidity and Mortality: Latin America and the Caribbean

Every year, 7,300 women die in Latin America and the Caribbean from causes related to childbirth. Although, the region has achieved significant advances in maternal health over the past few years, the majority of these tragedies continue to be preventable. Why do maternal deaths keep occuring? How can we prevent them? What have been the most successful and effective practices to reduce maternal mortality in recent years? Answering these questions would help inform the development of policies to combat this urgent public health challenge in the region in the coming years.

Produced by the Latin America and Caribbean Task Force for Maternal Mortality Reduction (GTR for its Spanish acronym), this new version of the strategic consensus presents an updated overview of the state of maternal mortality in the region, seeks to reaffirm the advances of the previous decade, and highlights new priorities and challenges, including the urgent need to reduce inequities, related to the reduction of maternal mortality within the framework of the 2030 Agenda. The GTR also reaffirms evidence-based strategies to prevent maternal mortality that were articulated in the previous consensus: strengthen national health systems at all levels; ensure financing of public health services; and guarantee high-quality, accessible, and affordable health services.
