Hewlett Accelerating Contraceptive Use Project Report

The Accelerating Contraceptive Use Project, funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, contributed to dramatic improvement in the acceptance of family planning in parts of Afghanistan. The use of injectable contraceptives, oral contraceptives, and condoms increased by an average of 15%, 4%, and 7%, respectively, over one year in locations in three provinces. MSH promoted healthy birth spacing, which is consistent with Islamic teachings, in a culturally appropriate way that earned credibility and appreciation in the community.
