Supporting Information Management
Better information systems support evidence-based decision making and planning. An effective pharmaceutical management information system (PMIS) can synthesize the large volume of data generated by pharmaceutical management operations. It then processes the data into information for use in planning activities, estimating demand, allocating resources, and monitoring and evaluating pharmaceutical management operations.
In collaboration with US and Afghan partners, SPS supported the implementation of a comprehensive PMIS for improved data management.
The project also assisted the MoPH and implementing NGOs to develop a Pharmaceutical Logistics Information System. This Microsoft Access-based system keeps track of the value and volume of medicines flowing through the supply chains of implementing organizations. The NGOs who implemented a BPHS/Essential Package of Hospital Services in 31 provinces are now able to file quarterly reports on the value and volume of medicines purchased and used.
