Building Service Delivery Capacity
A critical step in strengthening pharmaceutical systems is management development training to help ensure effective service delivery. SPS Afghanistan collaborated with the Human Resources Department of the MoPH to develop short-term strategic plans for bolstering pharmaceutical human resources in Afghanistan. SPS also worked with pharmacy teaching institutions to create and deliver essential training for current and future pharmacy leaders.
SPS completed a medicine use/prescribing practices study and designed training packages for physicians and pharmacists based on the findings. Kabul University Pharmacy School incorporated modern pharmaceutical management subjects into its curriculum, and the Ghazanfar Institute of Health Sciences similarly revised its pharmacy curriculum.
In all, 71 local pharmacy teaching institutions revised their pharmacy preservice education curriculum, and more than 6,550 individuals received in-service and/or on-the-job training in pharmaceutical systems management and practices.
