Belize
In Belize, USAID|PASCA LMG worked with the National AIDS Commission of Belize (NAC), as well as in partnership with organizations of key populations and the private sector.
USAID|PASCA LMG helped local groups in Belize to successfully advocate for important policy changes, including:
- Abolition of the the Sodomy Penalty Act (art. 53 of the Criminal Code), that promoted stigma and discrimination towards key populations. USAID|PASCA LMG supported the implementation of an advocacy strategy with other key partners. The Sodomy Act had been a barrier to access to health services for key populations[1] [2] and access to HIV prevention and care for people living with HIV.
- Structural changes in the HIV legal framework[3] [4] and increased participation in mechanisms such as the National AIDS Commission. USAID|PASCA LMG provided technical assistance to at least five local organizations to participate in advocacy and evidence-based policy dialogue that was needed to successfully lobby for these changes.
