South Africa has the most people living with HIV in the world and also surrounds the world’s highest-prevalence countries — Lesotho (22.9 percent prevalence rate) and Swaziland (27.4 percent prevalence rate). This year's conference, held in Durban June 9-12, will focus on "reflection, refocus and renewal" in the fight against AIDS. Between 2005 and 2013, AIDS-related deaths in South Africa fell by 39 percent, but the country still accounts for nearly one in four new infections in sub-Saharan Africa, which makes this year’s conference the most important one yet.
