Following is a list of selected tools and publications developed through the experience of the Center for Leadership and Management.

The Manager

Developing Managers Who Lead
This issue of The Manager shows how managing and leading can be practiced at the same time by managers at all levels. It discusses effective leadership values and practices that exist around the world. It explains how managers can, individually and together, undertake leadership development to become the kind of leaders who "when their work is done . . . , people . . . all say: 'We have done it ourselves.'" (Lao Tsu 1997, verse 17)

Planning for Leadership Transition
This issue of The Manager considers strategy and process for managing and a leadership transition. It describes how current leaders, staff members, and boards of directors can engage their organization in navigating the uncertainties of a search for a new leader. It explores ways to prepare for future transitions by developing leadership talents within the organization.

 

Tools

MOST: Management and Organizational Sustainability Tool MOST is a participatory approach to assessing the management of an organization and developing action plans to make needed improvements. This tool helps an organization draw on its collective experience to assess the current status of its management capabilities, identify changes that can be made to manage the organization more effectively, and develop a concrete plan for implementing the changes.

Human Resource Management Assessment Tool for HIV/AIDS This rapid assessment tool identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the HRM system including its effectiveness to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on the health workforce. It is used to help users developing an action plan to improve their response to HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

The Health Manager's Toolkit The Toolkit is an electronic compendium of tools designed to assist health professionals at all levels of an organization to provide accessible high-quality and sustainable health services. It is particularly useful for managers who lead others to produce results.

The Provider's Guide to Quality & Culture The Provider's Guide is a Web site designed to assist health care organizations throughout the US in providing high quality, culturally competent services to multi-ethnic populations.
