Dr. Berhanemeskal Assefa
Principal Technical Advisor
Berhanemeskal Assefa brings more than 30 years of clinical and managerial experience in medicine and public health, much of it in TB and TB/HIV. He serves as principal advisor on TB and as project director supervisor for both the Challenge TB project in South Sudan and for the Track TB project in Uganda. In his role as MSH's principal advisor on TB for Africa and Asia, Berhanemeskal has supported USAID TB CARE I projects as well as the USAID bilateral project, Heal TB.
Leading the MSH/TB CAP and TB CARE I technical team in Ethiopia, Berhanemeskal helped implement innovative approaches to increase TB and TB/HIV case detection. He actively participated in technical working groups that developed national TB and TB/HIV guidelines and tools, introduced operational validations, implemented new diagnostic procedures, and completed the first TB prevalence survey in Africa.
Prior to joining MSH, Berhanemeskal worked as a clinician, medical director and program coordinator. In 2009, he joined MSH's HIV/AIDS Care and Support (HCSP) project based in Ethiopia as TB, TB/HIV clinical advisor. At the time, this was the biggest USAID-funded program for HIV/AIDS in Africa. He then became MSH technical coordinator of the TB CAP project, which extended to the current TB CARE I project. Berhanemeskal has been trained widely in the areas of TB, TB/HIV, MDR-TB, management and leadership, and health systems strengthening.
