India - Proposed Country Strategy Establish a Network of Private Pharmacies and Services
A network of private pharmacies in rural areas, managed by one or more local nongovernmental organizations, would be established; Sewa Mandir International and India Institute for Rural Development are potential candidates to manage network operations. The private pharmacies would be set up adjacent to, or inside, public health care facilities. They would provide low-cost, quality essential medicines and services, including relevant patient counseling and simple diagnostic (laboratory) services. Ongoing development and implementation of standard treatment guidelines and the Rajasthan Essential Drugs List by the Rajasthan Society for Promotion of Rational Use of Drugs (RSPRUD) is expected to support demand for network pharmacy products and to improve the quality of medicine use. A pooled procurement and prime-distributor mechanism would be set up to supply low-cost, quality-assured products to network pharmacies. The proposed network would also use vehicles as itinerant shops to provide medicines to more remote or isolated areas on a regular schedule. In addition, rural private medical practitioners would provide products and services to areas that do not have a public health facility. A social marketing program would aim to increase acceptability of these products and services. Technical assistance is needed to develop and implement the proposed network of pharmacies, itinerant shops, and rural private medical practitioners. Individual InitiativesIndia was not selected as one of the countries for SEAM country program implementation. The assessment results as well as the proposed strategy for addressing access gaps were made available to the government and other donor programs for potential follow-on. |
