Over the years, CPM has developed several software programs for use in pharmaceutical management. Although MSH is not a software development company, the decision was made to develop these tools in response to a lack of viable, affordable commercial programs able to support the functions of pharmaceutical management.
Five tools previously developed by MSH are listed below. All but the ABC-VEN analysis program are DOS-based, with .DBF files compiled in Clipper 5.1.
- INVEC-2 is an inventory and procurement management program that supports procurement, inventory control, and distribution of medicines and medical supplies. The program calculates order requirements according to flexible, user-defined parameters and includes a module designed to help manage the tendering process. The program operates on either a multi- or single-user basis and is available in English and Spanish.
- ESTIMED is a software tool that estimates medicine requirements based on past consumption and morbidity patterns. Past consumption data can be imported directly from INVEC-2 or entered by health facilities.
- ECPRO-2 is the second version of a program used by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Pharmaceutical Procurement Service (OECS/PPS) (formerly called the Eastern Caribbean Drug Service [ECDS]) to manage pooled procurement and the organization's annual tender.
- Commodities and Logistics Management (CLM) software supports the key functions of a warehouse—ordering, receiving, and shipping—by ensuring that standard protocols such as FEFO (first expiring, first out) are followed and by facilitating the preparation of purchase orders, invoices, and other paperwork. CLM maintains an up-to-date inventory, by product and by lot, and allows warehouse personnel to instantly access lists of suppliers, clients, expected shipments, expiring lots, and pending client orders. The software and user manuals are available in English, French, and Spanish.
- ABC-VEN combines two methods for analyzing spending on medicines. ABC analysis is a powerful tool by which items are compared according to their annual usage, allowing the planner to prioritize the management of class A items (the 10–20 percent of items that account for 70–80 percent of funds spent) in selection and procurement decisions. VEN analysis is a system of setting priorities, in which medicines are classified according to their health impact: vital, essential, and nonessential. The software provides a structured approach for conducting either or both types of analysis.
