The Role of Mother Mentors in Supporting HIV-Positive Mothers

Report

This report reviews the role of mother mentors and their Mother Support Groups (MSGs) in supporting HIV-positive mothers to live healthy lives and use appropriate health services. Against the backdrop of existing data and research on mother mentors and MSGs elsewhere, this report includes a comparative analysis of HIV service uptake among HIV-positive pregnant women and young mothers seen at health centers in the Amhara and Tigray regions of Ethiopia. The health centers are supported by the Ethiopia Network for HIV/AIDS Treatment, Care and Support (ENHAT-CS) program.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) ENHAT-CS program is funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and implemented by Management Sciences for Health (MSH) under USAID Cooperative Agreement number AID- 663-A-11-00006. MSH’s partners include the African Network for Care of Children Affected by HIV/AIDS (ANECCA), Dawn of Hope Ethiopia (DHEA), the Ethiopian Interfaith Forum for Development Dialogue and Action (EIFDDA), Ethiopian Public Health Association (EPHA), HST Consulting, Association for Social Services & Development (IMPACT), International Training & Education Center for Health (I-TECH), National Network of Positive Women Ethiopians (NNPWE), and Save the Children (SC).
