The Cost of Integrated Community Case Management in Luapula Province, Zambia
Integrated community case management (iCCM) is considered to be an effective strategy for expanding the treatment of diarrhea, pneumonia, and malaria, which result in nearly 44 percent of deaths worldwide in children under five. Despite the success of this strategy in several low-income countries, iCCM programs in many other countries have yet to be implemented or expanded. This is partly due to concern or uncertainty about the costs and financing of iCCM programs. With support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, MSH analyzed iCCM costs in several African countries – Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, South Sudan and Zambia. The results of these analyses could be compared with the results of impact evaluations of these same programs to review the costs of achieving the impact and will provide a set of baseline studies that may be useful for further analyses. This report describes the results of the costing analysis in Zambia of an iCCM program implemented by Malaria Consortium in Luapula province.
