Postpartum Hemorrhage: A Challenge for Safe Motherhood

This overview defines postpartum hemorrhage, one of the major causes of maternal death and disability in developing countries, and describes its prevalence worldwide; outlines why women in developing countries are at greater risk of dying from severe bleeding; and proposes specific actions that policy makers and other stakeholders can undertake to address the problem.

Postpartum Hemorrhage: Responding to the Challenge

This companion piece to Postpartum Hemorrhage: A Challenge for Safe Motherhood outlines the potential role of a widely available drug (misoprostol) in reducing deaths from postpartum hemorrhage, and describes a multi-country initiative being undertaken to evaluate misoprostol as an alternative therapy for postpartum hemorrhage prevention and treatment. The document lists the potential advantages of misoprostol (as compared to standard treatments) in resource-constrained settings; describes the rationale, objectives, and research protocols related to the research efforts; and lists other planned activities that aim to shape policy and share information in support of misoprostol for PPH.
