Supervisor Self-Competency Assessment

Purpose:
To provide supervisors with a tool to assess their competence and performance as supervisors and use the results to develop a plan for self-improvement.

Description:
The Supervisor Competency Self-Assessment Inventory is a self-evaluation tool designed to be used by supervisors to assess their competency and experience in a number of supervisory functions and to develop plans for improvement. The tool is organized according to the major functions that supervisors perform (Gaining Acceptance, Work Planning, Motivation, Performance Review, Counseling, Conflict Resolution, Time Management). These functions are described in a matrix with a 1- 4 scale indicative of levels of competence, performance and experience. There is no scoring involved.

Developed by:
Management Sciences for Health in 1998.

Application:
The Supervisor Competency Self-Assessment Inventory has been pilot tested by a small, international sample of supervisors from different organizational levels and different functional areas. The sample represented both NGO and Public Sector Organizations. Their comments resulted in changes to the Inventory itself. There is no data available as to whether they did follow-through on an individual supervisor development plan. While this Inventory is intended primarily for individual use, it has been used occasionally by trainers as a needs assessment tool to identify specific supervisory functions for emphasis in training programs.

Advantages:
Easy to use, requires no training, facilitates clear identification of the critical skills required for effective supervision. There is no scoring involved. It is applicable to supervisors in all types of organizations. Individuals can use it to improve their supervisory functioning. It can also serve as a guide to developing supervisory training programs.

Limitations:
Interpretation may be required of some functions as they relate to the actual supervisory roles of individuals.

Recommendation for Users:
Best used by individuals in an organization.

Reports and Publications:
None.
