Strengthening the HIV & AIDS Response in Ethiopia
This article originally appeared in the December 2009 issue of Monday Developments Magazine, www.mondaydevelopments.org
The government of Ethiopia, in collaboration with the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR ), the US Agency for International Development and a host of international and national nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) has undertaken the largest scale-up in Africa of HIV & AIDS services at the health center and community levels. Its efforts are rooted in a commitment to expanding access to health care and the belief that a comprehensive, integrated approach (one that strengthens the health system as a whole, from the national to the community level) is the way to achieve this goal. Its success offers insights into the importance of this community-level effort in the fight to combat AIDS and strengthen health care systems more broadly.
