SPS and LMI Provide Technical Assistance to KEMSA

KEMSA

The Strengthening Pharmaceutical Systems (SPS) Program is working with one of its core partners, Logistics Management Institute (LMI), to improve Kenya Medical Supplies Agency’s (KEMSA) transparency and accountability in the health sector. By reducing rent-seeking opportunities, KEMSA can increase access to affordable health care.

Established in 2001 as the government’s pharmaceutical and commodity procurement and distribution agency, KEMSA has made progress, such as instituting direct monthly deliveries to facilities. Yet the agency continues to struggle with its responsibilities, resulting in a decline in confidence among the public health sector.

Under the banner of “Know Your Medicines,” Namibia celebrated the launch of its Therapeutics Information and Pharmacovigilance Center (TIPC) and the inaugural publication of its newsletter, The Namibia Medicines Watch, which was the culmination of a two-year collaboration between Management Sciences for Health’s Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus and Strengthening Pharmaceutical Systems (SPS) Programs and Namibia’s Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS).
