With support from the
President’s Malaria Initiative, SPS is working toward the following objectives in Madagascar—
- Strengthening the pharmaceutical management capacity of the country’s Directorate of Pharmacy, Laboratories, and Traditional Medicine
- Helping train health care staff and providing supportive supervision
- Supporting the Institute National de Santé Publique et Communautaire’s efforts to expand preservice pharmaceutical management training for health care workers
RPM Plus started providing technical assistance to the Ministry of Health in Madagascar in 2005 in quantification, pharmacovigilance, and revision of the country’s first-line malaria treatment policy. However, implementing the new policy revealed some weaknesses in Madagascar’s pharmaceutical management system.
As a result, SPS is working closely with various government agencies, such as the central medical store; the Directorate of Pharmacies, Laboratories and Traditional Medicines; and the Malaria Control Program, to coordinate and strengthen pharmaceutical management efforts and to ensure effective oversight of the Madagascar pharmaceutical supply system.
Activities include integrating the new malaria policy into existing supervision programs and building capacity in pharmaceutical management among health care workers by expanding the pre-service training program for nurses and developing a program to train pharmacy technicians to work in the public health sector.
