Global Response

Improving the Availability and Use of Antimalarial Medicines

The RPM Plus Program, with funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), seeks to improve access to and use of medicines and other commodities for malaria programs (for example, rapid diagnostic tests, supplies, and basic medical equipment).

RPM Plus is engaged in malaria policy dialogue and works at the global, regional, and national levels to support international initiatives, which include Roll Back Malaria (RBM); the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM); and the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI).

RPM Plus's major areas of work in malaria control include—

  • Support to artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) policy design and implementation
RPM Plus provides technical assistance to countries taking steps to change their first-line treatment to ACT, from the evaluation and planning stage to the rollout of the new policy. The process entails a review of operational and technical issues, in both the public and private sector, that must be addressed to achieve successful policy change.

  • Support to the RBM Partnership for global improved supply and use of quality antimalarials and related supplies
RPM Plus is engaged at the global level with the Roll Back Malaria Partnership and the Malaria Medicines and Supplies Service (MMSS) to support the prequalification of ACT producers, as well as forecasting and tracking global needs for antimalarials and other supplies. RPM Plus also works with RBM and MMSS to develop and disseminate standards and tools for malaria-related commodities management.
