Country-level Strategies

RPM Plus uses the systems approach and in particular focuses
on key steps to develop country-level interventions—
  • Providing assessment and systems diagnosis
  • Conducting options analyses
  • Designing country interventions
  • Evaluating intervention impact

Before designing any interventions in a country, an options analysis is needed to help identify potential country-specific interventions. The legal, regulatory, political, technical, and
financial implications will be assessed to determine the feasibility and sustainability of the interventions. The criteria for intervention selection, adaptation, and design should include human resource requirements, suitability to country context, cost, and sustainability.

Focus on Senegal

Child receiving medicationThese steps were followed in Senegal. Two situation analysis surveys were conducted—an assessment of drug management for childhood illness (DMCI [PDF - 100 KB]) in 2001 and a community level assessment of drug management for childhood illness (C-DMCI [PDF - 100 KB]) in 2002. These surveys diagnosed strengths and weaknesses in the availability and use of medicines in support of child health in the public and private sectors as well as in the community. The Ministry of Health was highly instrumental in conducting the surveys as were other partners such as BASICS and WHO.
