HIV/AIDS Pharmaceutical Management Training Course

Massive efforts are underway to scale up antiretroviral therapy (ART) in developing countries. These efforts, however, will be jeopardized unless the management of HIV/AIDS-related medicines and supplies is improved.

Within this context, Management Sciences for Health through the Rational Pharmaceutical Management (RPM) Plus Program has designed the HIV/AIDS Pharmaceutical Management Training Course as a key component of RPM Plus's capacity-building initiative to strengthen pharmaceutical management in the East Africa region.

The overall goal of the training is to ensure the efficient and effective supply and use of ARVs and the related commodities required in an ART program. On completion of the training, participants should be able to—

  • Explain the elements of pharmaceutical management that are specific to ART services
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply pharmaceutical management practices to support ART services
  • Demonstrate a comprehension of good dispensing practices, including the counseling and monitoring necessary for rational antiretroviral use

These training materials are designed to teach participants the basics in pharmaceutical management for HIV/AIDS.

The materials also give participants the tools to identify local problems, the skills to analyze them, and the resources with which to propose possible solutions using the Monitoring, Training, Planning (MTP) approach. MTP guides participants through a cycle of skills building and problem solving.

To maximize the learning experience, this training course is divided into two phases. Phase 1 consists of the basic ART training course, plus training on the MTP approach, where participants identify the key problems that need to be addressed in their facilities or districts, and select the sessions that will provide the information and training needed to address those problems. Once the participants identify their priority sessions, Phase 2 moves the MTP process forward in an ongoing cycle of one-day sessions at 6-8 week intervals incorporating monitoring, training, and planning that participants use to achieve concrete results.
