The Virtual Leadership Development Program

Throughout the world, forward-thinking organizations and governments are working to strengthen their leadership and management capabilities. MSH's Management and Leadership Program offers the VLDP to help managers strengthen their leadership skills and to more effectively meet organizational challenges in a rapidly changing environment.

VLDP website screen shotThe Virtual Leadership Development Program (VLDP) is an integrated learning program that extends leadership development opportunities into the workplace for health managers and their teams, who seldom have the time or the resources to attend offsite leadership development programs. The program is designed for teams rather than individual managers; workgroups enroll together to develop action plans and then set these plans into motion at their workplaces.

The VLDP uses a blended-learning model, combining both face-to-face training activities and distance learning. Experienced MSH staff facilitate the 12-week virtual leadership development program, providing support and feedback to participants via e-mail and postings on the VLDP Web site. Participants have access to this Web site during the program. They also get a CD-ROM for access to materials offline, and a printed workbook for team activities. With coaching and support from the facilitators, participants work together in small teams to identify the key challenges facing their organizations and to plan ways to meet these challenges.

After completing the program the teams continue to receive follow-up support. They can communicate with facilitators, participate in a virtual leadership network, and access leadership development materials and events. Designed for both public and private sector managers, VLDP activities are easily integrated with other training and technical assistance.

Three Spanish language VLDPs were delivered to teams from health service institutions in eight countries during 2002 and 2003. In 2004, the VLDP will be offered in Portuguese to HIV/AIDS NGOs in Brazil and in English to health organizations facing the HIV/AIDS challenge in Africa.
