Improving Management Systems

The LMS Program:
Develops Managers Who Lead Improves Management Systems

Low morale, poor staff retention, inefficient financial systems, poor planning, and poor expense monitoring—these are some of the challenges facing organizations and health systems around the world. Improved management systems enable organizations and health systems to respond effectively to change and produce improved health outcomes.

Organizations working in health all strive to maximize the performance of their workforce and management systems to improve the health of their communities. LMS works with organizations using a participatory approach that engages staff across the organization. This approach focuses on positive changes in not only the engineering of the management systems, but also how they are used, improving capacity in both leadership and management. With LMS, the organization owns this change process and brings qualified technical assistance providers with access to a variety of products and resources to work side by side with counterparts in all areas of management, including:

  • Organizational development
  • Planning
  • Human resource management
  • Financial management
  • Information management

Using LMS approaches to improve management systems, a small, faith-based organization in Bolivia which operates five health clinics and a small hospital went from operating heavily in debt to achieving a cost recovery of more than 100 percent at all its locations (111 percent cumulatively). This was achieved through application of a participatory management assessment process (the Management and Organizational Sustainability Tool) to clearly identify priorities and focus technical assistance in the areas of planning, financial, information, and human resource management.
