Linking Leadership and Management to Good Governance

Successfully strengthening leadership and management capacity has contributed to improvements in governance across a diverse and wide range of programs in the public sector, civil society, and complex multi-sectoral bodies in developing countries. After examining this link in 10 countries, LMS concludes:

  • Good governance is about people as well as systems.
  • Although every country is unique, the approaches, strategies and tools to strengthen good governance can be effectively transferred.
  • Governance is different than management and leadership but uses the tools from both.

This report is one of four strategic evaluations carried out by the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Communications Team of the LMS program; together, they offer a comprehensive, cross-program examination of LMS field programs between 2005 and 2010.

 
Select Results from Study

  • In Cote d’Ivoire, LMS governance work with the Global Fund’s Country Coordinating Mechanism led to two successful proposals for Round 9, totaling $217 million.

  • In Afghanistan, LMS work has led to the development or revision of 15 national health policies related to child health, communicable diseases, health financing, and health information systems.
