Leadership Development Improves Health Service Delivery

From 2005-2010, LMS has continuously built the management and leadership practices of health care professionals, a key investment in improving service delivery.  This study looks at how leadership development has impacted health service delivery in eight countries:

  • By strengthening these practices, health managers are better equipped to respond to changes in their workplace, a critical need as countries around the world scale-up HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB, family planning, and other services.
  • Sound management and leadership practices create a foundation for developing strong health systems as well as organizational sustainability.

This report is one of four strategic evaluations carried out by the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Communications Team of the LMS program; together, they offer a comprehensive, cross-program examination of LMS field programs between 2005 and 2010.

 
Select Results from Study
  • In the communities in which LMS is working in Peru, the number of children ages 6 to 24 months who are drinking clean water increased from 26% to 71% between June 2006 and December 2009.

  • In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the rate of births assisted by qualified personnel in LMS-supported health zones was 94% in the first quarter of 2010, up from 60% six months earlier.
