Through the Community-based Family Planning and HIV & AIDS Services in Malawi project, MSH is working to enable more Malawian men, women, and families to use high quality, integrated family planning and HIV & AIDS services. This project works with the Ministry of Health and other community based organizations, especially at the zonal level in eight target districts, to promote fully functional services to clients in rural areas through a revitalized network of 1,000 Community-Based Distribution Agents (CBDAs) trained in family planning (FP) and HIV integration.

In addition to applying and expanding clinical health services to improve the quality of and demand for FP/HIV services, the project will expand the contraceptive method mix, including long-term and permanent methods and scientific natural contraceptive methods. The project will engage and train decision-makers, nurses and clinicians at the national, zonal, and district levels to heighten awareness of FP/HIV issues and advocate for supportive policies, including a policy that allows provision of injectable contraceptives by CBDAs.

MSH implements this project with two subcontractors (Constella Futures on policy issues and Population Services International on behavior change and communication) and with local collaborating partners (the Christian Health Association of Malawi, the Muslim Association of Malawi, the Malawi College of Health Sciences, and the Peace Corps).
