Democratic Republic of the Congo

In Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), maternal and child mortality rates are decreasing but still high, and other health indicators remain challenging. In conjunction with the country's ministry of public health and other partners, MSH programs cover six of the country's 11 provinces to improve the quality accessibility of health services.

The Integrated Health Program (IHP) has reached 17 percent of the country's population and is estimated to have saved more than 150,000 babies and young children between 2010 and 2015. IHP assisted the ministry in improving the quality and use of services at more than 2,000 health facilities, in large part by building local capacity in health specialties and management. IHP has also pioneered an innovative, results-based financing system that has led to swift improvements at health facilities. IHP's work continues as IHPplus.

The Systems for Improved Access to Pharmaceuticals and Services Program (SIAPS) is building DRC's ability to maintain an effective supply chain so that medicines reliably reach local health facilities and community sites. SIAPS also trains hospital personnel in pharmaceutical use, which has dramatically reduced pharmaceutical expenses in hospitals and has reduced stays by up to two-thirds.
