Kenyatta National Hospital Launch of First Ever Comprehensive and Locally Developed Formulary

Other Resources

On September 6, 2013, Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya held a media event to launch the first comprehensive, locally developed formulary for a public sector health institution in Kenya. A hospital formulary is a document or manual listing all medicines approved for use in a specific healthcare institution. It indicates the uses of each listed medicine, dosing information, guidelines for administration and reporting of side effects.

Traditionally, African countries have relied on borrowed formularies from other countries e.g. the British National Formulary (BNF) which at times have not addressed information requirements of local institutions.

This formulary was developed under the stewardship of the hospitals’ Medicines and Therapeutics Committee (MTC) with Health Commodities and Services Management (HCSM) Program providing technical support with funding from USAID/Kenya for the process.
