MSH Awarded Additional Grant to Continue HIV & AIDS Capacity-Building with the Government of Nigeria

 MSH was recently awarded a $60 million five-year follow-on project to the USAID-funded LMS-AIDS Care and Treatment (LMS-ACT) project. Under LMS-ACT (2007-2009), MSH has been assisting the government of Nigeria to take leadership of Nigeria’s HIV & AIDS response at both the federal and state levels, working with the Nigerian government to build the capacity of government health systems, improve health workers’ skills, and take full ownership of providing staff and resources for improved delivery, quality, and sustainability of HIV/AIDS/TB care. As of May 2009, 132,848 people were tested for HIV & AIDS, counseled, and received their results—including 35,883 pregnant women—and 3,112 patients received antiretroviral therapy.

During LMS-ACT, USAID and MSH found that leadership and management strategies used in the project were effective in creating an environment for the government to work together with civil society-based organizations, communities, and other partners, creating a sustainable government-led partnership in line with USAID’s recent reauthorization of PEPFAR. The follow-on project, Prevention and Organizational Systems—AIDS Care and Treatment Project (LMS-Pro-ACT), also funded by USAID, will continue LMS-ACT’s work to build the capacity of government and civil society organizations by developing organizational systems to strengthen the health system for delivery of integrated health and HIV/AIDS/TB services.

LMS Pro-ACT will assist with training health care workers to deliver a core package of services that will include HIV prevention and AIDS care and treatment, as well as maternal, neonatal, and child health services, including family planning, malaria, and nutrition interventions. LMS Pro-ACT will also support the strengthening of important community organizational systems for management of HIV & AIDS as a chronic illness and support overall improvements in community health through a small grants program.
