Malawi

MSH programs in Malawi focus on disease prevention, maternal and child health, and strengthening health care systems. Since 2003, MSH innovations have helped Malawi shift from facility-dominated health care to community-led interventions.

The District Health System Strengthening and Quality Improvement for Service Delivery (DHSS) project (2012-2018) supported the country’s Ministry of Health in implementing its national strategic plan for HIV and AIDS, and its health sector strategic plan. The project, funded by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, worked to strengthen health service delivery in seven districts. By the end of September 2017, nearly 180,000 people were tested at DHSS-supported facilities and knew their HIV status in the seven project districts, and just over 175,000 of them were on antiretroviral therapy after receiving services at project-supported facilities. The DHSS project also evaluated the National Evaluation of the Malawi Prevention of Maternal to Child Transmission of HIV Program.

MSH also supported the development of Option B+, an innovative policy to test and treat all pregnant HIV-infected women irrespective of their clinical stage or CD4 count. MSH helped Malawi to roll out the new policy of “test and treat” to initiate antiretroviral treatment for all who need it.

MSH also helped Malawi’s ministry of health to implement the District Health Performance Improvement (DHPI), funded by UNICEF. This project helps districts to better plan, prioritize, and focus resources in order to improve maternal and child health.
