The President's Malaria Initiative: Bringing Effective Malaria Medicines to Angola
The Government of Angola declared an artemisinin-containing
combination treatment (ACT), Coartem®, as its first-line malaria treatment
because of the high levels of resistance to traditional antimalarial monotherapies,
but it faced several challenges in getting the new medicines into its
health facilities. By developing close working relationships among its
partners, including PMI, RPM Plus, WHO, the Global Fund, and Angola’s Essential Medicines Program, and by improving its own leadership capabilities, the National Malaria Control Program has made significant progress in overcoming these challenges.
