MSH Welcomes New USAID Mission Director to Rwanda

The USAID-funded Integrated Health Systems Strengthening Project (IHSSP) welcomed Mr. Peter Malnak, the new USAID Mission Director, to Rwanda on August 28, 2012.

Launched in November 2009, IHSSP is a five-year project, led by Management Sciences for Health (MSH), which seeks to improve access to quality health services for all Rwandans. IHSSP also works with the nation’s administrative districts and supports their efforts to collaborate with community and civil society organizations to manage health services throughout Rwanda.

Mr. Malnak visited IHSSP accompanied by Marie Ahmed, the IHSSP Contracting Officer’s Technical Representative, and Dr. Michael Karangwa, the IHSSP Activity Manager. Through detailed presentations and demonstrations, the IHSSP project team presented their most notable achievements in the areas of health information management systems, performance-based financing, quality improvement, and human resources for health.

These presentations also highlighted the project’s success in helping the Government of Rwanda to implement community-based health insurance (CBHI), a program which aims to improve access to health care for the poorest and most vulnerable segments of the population.

Mr. Malnak stated that he was very impressed with the presentations and encouraged the IHSSP team to continue their important work in Rwanda.
