Health systems strengthening drives MSH’s response to the HIV epidemic. In over 35 countries we build the capacity of public and private sector organizations to implement HIV prevention, care and treatment interventions. Our work addresses all elements of the health system: service delivery; leadership and governance; medical products, vaccines and technologies; health financing; health information and human resources. MSH supports universal access for all, but especially for the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people. Our projects are scalable, integrated, decentralized from the health facility to the home and result in sustainable public health impact.
Highlights of Our HIV & AIDS Work
The Management Sciences for Health/John Snow, Inc. Partnership for Supply Chain Management (PFSCM) is the largest global supplier of ARVs and related supplies through PEPFAR's Supply Chain Management System (SCMS) and the Global Fund's Voluntary Pooled Procurement (VPP). Since December 2006 SCMS has saved PEPFAR clients more than $34 million by shifting shipments from air to sea and more than $2 million with road freight out of regional distribution centers. VPP ensures a cost effective and efficient procurement system by reducing procurement bottlenecks and supply chain management challenges to speed access to pharmaceuticals and medical products. In 2010 the European Supply Chain and Logistics Summit recognized PFSCM's groundbreaking work with the Supply Chain Innovation Award and Best Value Supply Chain Provider Award.
The Ethiopia HIV & AIDS Care and Support Program (HCSP) is facilitating the largest national expansion, in Africa, of decentralized HIV & AIDS services to health centers, serving catchment areas with approximately 30 million people (37% of the total population). The project supports 550 Government of Ethiopia health centers to provide comprehensive HIV/AIDS services, of which 350 provide antiretrovirals.
MSH is the lead partner for the highly successful Grants Management Solutions (GMS) project, financed by PEPFAR/USAID, which provides urgent short term technical assistance and capacity-building services to Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanisms and Principal Recipients. Since the start of the project GMS has worked in 55 of the 140 Global Fund countries, provided technical support to 164 Global Fund task orders, and worked on 27% of the Global Fund’s grants.
