Over two decades of war and conflict have had dire consequences for the health of the Afghan people, especially women and children. Destruction of hospitals and clinics, the flight of trained health personnel and a Taliban proscription on training new midwives contributed to one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in the world.
In partnership with the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) and NGO recipients of REACH grants, the USAID-funded REACH Program is working to rebuild the health system and provide Afghans with a basic package of health services and an essential package of hospital services. With six provincial field offices and programs ranging from Midwifery training, a health-based literacy initiative, and drug management to refresher training for doctors, nurses, pharmacists and lab technicians, REACH is helping the Afghans shape a brighter, healthier future.
